In Oil Paintings

a: Efflorescence ~
b: the common cold

What: "Efflorescence is like the common cold, there are many different causes of these symptoms."....Stearates may be one explanation for oil painting, but the cause would be different for an egg tempera painting. That stearates may be one likely cause of efflorescence on oil paintings is based on a study by Eugena Ordonez and John Twilley, "Clarifying the Haze: Efflorescence on Works of Art" in Analytical Chemistry 1997, 69, American Chemical Society, 416A-422A.
